EMDR

EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITISATION AND REPROCESSING

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychotherapy method designed to help people process and heal from distressing or traumatic experiences. It is based on the idea that trauma can overwhelm the brain’s natural ability to process memories, causing painful emotions, intrusive thoughts, and physical reactions to remain “stuck.” During EMDR, one engages in bilateral stimulation—often through guided eye movements, tapping, or auditory tones—while focusing on specific memories or emotions. This process supports the brain in reprocessing traumatic experiences, reducing emotional distress, and integrating new, healthier beliefs.

I use EMDR to help clients move beyond the lingering effects of trauma, anxiety, and other emotional wounds. I begin by creating a safe, supportive therapeutic environment and building coping skills so clients feel prepared and grounded before processing deeper material. When a client is ready, I guide them through the sessions at a pace that honours their comfort and emotional capacity. EMDR allows us to work with the mind and body simultaneously, fostering transformative healing without requiring clients to relive traumatic events in a traditional narrative way. Over time, clients often experience increased emotional resilience, reduced symptoms, and a sense of empowerment as they reclaim their well-being.
